Proper use of smoothing Broaches
Insert the smooth broach into the bushing in the same direction as the cutting broach. Just before it is tight in the bush, apply a small amount of oil to the smoothing broach. Exert only a little inward pressure and rotate the broach in both directions. When it feels firm, withdraw the smoothing broach and it has done its job. The smoothing broach does two things-one, it work hardens the inner surface of the bush and secondly, it tends to remove any 'rifling' marks left by the cutting broach. Following the smoothing operation, champher the inside lip of the bush, ever so slightly. Just enough to see a bright ring at the entrance edge.
